Stories To Tell: Melissa Lau, Wanderful Traveler

Stories To Tell

We have a penchant for telling stories. And though we have so many to share, in this series we’re handing over the pen.

Because when it comes to the neighbourhoods we call home, nothing speaks louder than the recommendations and experiences of you, our guests. So welcome to ‘Stories To Tell’, and our first edition that takes place once upon a weekend in Brisbane.

“It felt reminiscent of my travels in Europe, where I stayed in hotels that blended stunning classic architecture with modern luxury. I liked that the Art Deco accents gave a nod to the hotel’s 1920s origins, and the floor-to-ceiling windows in our room framed a beautiful view of Brisbane’s skyline.”

Melissa Lau is a traveller. One that loves unique and character-filled stays enriched with luxury. Seeking a staycation that proposed time to kick-back and unwind, she and her partner made The Inchcolm their home away from home for a weekend.

The Inchcolm is a boutique Brisbane gem. It perfectly balances heritage charm with modern comforts, giving it a refined yet inviting vibe.”

Warmly welcomed by hosts and a cabinet of curiosities, guests of The Inchcolm are treated to a uniquely boutique experience. Once checked-in (and invited to join martini hour at 5pm, of course) they take a journey in an ornate lift and along mysterious dimly-lit hallways to find rooms filled with light and character.

Charmed by the oddity and indulgence of their urban retreat, Melissa and her partner decided to opt for a ‘night out’ without leaving the hotel. And with the chance to enjoy a sundowner spritz on the balcony overlooking the city before retreating inside to the luminous lounge, we would too.

“We headed down the winding staircase to The Inchcolm Bar for drinks and dinner. Known for its martinis, it felt like we’d stepped back in time to a chic speakeasy from the jazz age. With dark wood walls, green velvet couches, draping curtains, and cozy tables, the atmosphere was warm and welcoming. The live jazz music set a lovely tone, adding to the relaxed, laid-back vibe.”

“Dinner only added to the romance. We started with fresh oysters and a refreshing kingfish ceviche, followed by flavourful beef tartare. For mains, we enjoyed grain-fed wagyu and tender tomahawk pork, each dish showcasing simple yet delicious flavours. It was an opportunity to reconnect and have conversations outside of our usual routine, and the peaceful ambience continued as we were able to simply stroll back to our room.”

Then came time to step out of the French-inspired hotel and explore the Brisbane surrounds. Melissa enjoyed the local community charms in Spring Hill and the conveniently central location, before returning ‘home’ to the heart of the neighbourhood, The Inchcolm.

“The location is convenient—just a 20-minute drive from the airport and tucked away on a quiet street near Central Station. It is a good balance of peace and easy access to the best spots in the city. One of my favourite places in Brisbane is Howard Smith Wharves, only a 15-minute walk away. It’s hands down my top recommendation for visitors. The area is lively, right by the water, and the city sunset views are incredible—definitely a must-see if you’re in Brisbane!”

“For a little retail therapy, Queen Street Mall was a 10-minute walk away, offering a mix of local stores and popular brands. James Street, just an 8-minute drive or bus ride away, is a lively street lined with stylish boutiques, restaurants, and cafes. And if you’re looking to explore a bit more, South Bank Parklands is only a 15-minute train ride or a 20-minute drive away. It’s a great spot with art galleries, green spaces, and the iconic Streets Beach.”

“We enjoyed a selection of breakfast favourites, available to grab and go (a nice perk of booking directly), and indulged in some delicious pastries and fresh fruit before heading home. We left feeling relaxed and recharged. Next time we stay, we’re planning to check out the Brisbane City Clock Tower tour. It includes a ride in one of Brisbane’s oldest working cage lifts, a chance to peek behind Australia’s largest analogue clock faces, and, from what we’ve heard, the views from the top are breathtaking!”
